One of the most important steps in event planning is getting to know the client. We know that the relationship can grow even stronger when the client has a chance to get to know us, too! Our team always uses their talents and unique perspectives to make your event a success. Here we continue our blog series Meet Our Event Designers by asking Joanie Rylander some questions.
Joanie has been with Purple Onion Catering Co. since 2009 and is now our Senior Event Designer & Creative Director. She started working in the industry in 2003 as a meeting planner in Washington DC. Inspired by the world of fashion and interior design, Joanie is committed to the true styling of an event, creating not just a party but also an experience.
What is your dream event?
I would love to plan something like the Oscars or the White House Correspondents Dinner.
Name an artist you’d like to be compared to and why?
I love anything Martha Stewart. She is my idol when it comes to crafts, food, decorating and entertaining. She has only gotten better after all the obstacles in her life. Despite the embarrassment and loss of income, she has only proven to be more resilient; she did what she had to do and came out even more successful than before. Martha Stewart is my kindred spirit!
What has been the hardest challenge you have overcome?
Evolving through the years as the company changed has been the hardest challenge. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut and follow the same practices that are “working.” However, to me, this practice leads to mediocrity. To stay relevant you have to be continually growing as the client is constantly changing.
The world is going to end. What is your last meal?
It would be a race around town to have my last meal! The menu would have barbacoa and carnitas tacos from Taco Bamba, a Five Guys little, or make that a regular, cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and A1 sauce and Pupatella’s Neapolitan pizza. Finally, cupcake from Baked and Wired is a must before I died!
What do you love most about your job?
Early on in my career I realized that I didn’t want a mundane 9-5 job. So I went and found a job that is different every single day. Every single day brings a new set of challenges, projects, ongoing projects and clients, which for me, is very rewarding and keeps me engaged. I also get to work with passionate, creative, fun and really hard working people.
